Background Character is a Chicago art-punk trio whose songs shift genres mid-song; the band describes this as "Hyperrock," and elsewhere self-tags as "420th Wave Ska" and "Distracted Post Punk." Drummer Bash and bassist Salem anchor the group's left-turn arrangements, per a January 2025 Chicago Reader preview. The band released its fourth full-length, Recordings 2024, in 2024.
